Book Description
Collectors of Mark Crilley's AKIKO comic books have long had a well-kept secret all to themsleves: the ongoing procession of fun features, pin-ups, and gags that has marched through the back pages of this series from the very start. AKIKO: FLIGHTS OF FANCY brings together these little-seen works for the first time. These rare pages represent some of Crilley's most creative work to date.
About the Author
Mark Crilley was raised in Detroit, Michigan, where his parents allowed him to indulge his habit of telling tall tales from a very early age. After graduating from Kalamazoo College in 1988, he traveled to Taiwan and Japan, where he taught English to students of all ages for nearly five years. It was during his stay in Japan in 1992 that he created the story of Akiko and her journey to Smoo. First published by Sirius Entertainment as a comic book in 1995, the bi-monthly AKIKO series has since earned Mark numerous award nominations (including over a dozen Eisner Award nominations), as well as a spot on Entertainment Weekly's "100 Most Creative People in Entertainment" list in 1998. Five of ten hardcover AKIKO novelizations from Random House Children's Books are already in bookstores (written and illustrated by Crilley). He currently lives with his wife, Miki, and their son in Royal Oak, Michigan, just a few miles from the streets where he was raised.
